Deputy Harris and K-9 Loki
Loki is a two-year-old Belgian Malinois. He was imported from Poland and trained by Mike Morgan, owner of Mid-Michigan Kennels, located in Eaton Rapids, Michigan. The funds to purchase Loki were provided by a private donor from Waterloo.
Deputy Harris is pictured below with Loki after finding a large quantity of ICE methamphetamine.
Loki’s handler is Deputy Matt Harris who has been employed by the Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office since 1997. Deputy Harris has been working with service dogs since 1999 when he began volunteering with a search and rescue organization. Deputy Harris worked with Black Hawk County’s previous canine Jasper for several years prior to Jasper's retirement in the fall of 2012.
Loki is a dual-purpose canine trained not only for narcotics detection but also for tracking, article search, handler protection, and criminal apprehension. Loki and Deputy Harris train as a team for an average of 16 hours a month in addition to a regular work schedule. Loki and Deputy Harris hold certifications from the United States Police Canine Association (USPCA) and the International Police Work Dog Association (IPWDA).
Since beginning his service with Deputy Harris in September of 2012, Loki has aided not only the Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office but also surrounding agencies in narcotics arrests and locating fleeing criminals. Loki also serves his role in public relations helping Deputy Harris educate children and the public.
K-9 Loki was a recipient of both a ballistic vest grant and a health insurance grant through Vested Interest, Inc. of East Taunton, MA. We are quite fortunate as only a few police K-9s nationwide were chosen to receive these generous grants. More information about the grant and the awards can be found at: https://www.vik9s.org/.
In his off-time Loki enjoys sunning himself in the yard, a lot of love and attention from family and friends, as well as playing with Matt’s young son and Jasper.
